History
Jared McCain played basketball at Centennial High School. He was named the California Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior after averaging 17 Points, 5 Rebounds, and 4 Assists per game.
In his senior year, McCain averaged 18 points, 7 Rebounds, 4 Assists, and 1.5 steals per game and was named the California Gatorade Player of the Year again.
Coming out of high school McCain was a 5-star recruit and received many full scholarships to play in college.
In 2023, Jared McCain decided to attend and play basketball at Duke University. He had a very solid 1 season with the team averaging 14 Points, 5 Rebounds, 2 Assists, and 1 Steal on 46% Shooting in 32 minutes per game.
After playing for 1 year at Duke, McCain entered the NBA draft. He was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 16th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft.
This Season
Jared McCain is off to a really strong start in his first year in the NBA.
So far this season he is averaging a solid:
15.3 Points
2.6 Assists
2.4 Rebounds
46% of shots made
This season he also has the:
NBA record for most 3-pointers made in the first five starts of a career
76er's record for most 3-pointers made through the first 15 games of a career
NBA rookie record for most consecutive games with at least three 3-pointers made
At the beginning of this season, McCain wasn't even listed as one of the top 15 contenders for Rookie of the Year, but now he is predicted to win the award, which shows just how much he has exceeded expectations.
TikTok
You can't talk about Jared McCain without talking about TikTok. This is a weird sentence to say when talking about an NBA player, but it's true.
Jared McCain has over 4.3 Million followers on TikTok through posting fun videos of him singing, dancing, and some basketball-related stuff.
He also has a Youtube channel where he shows the behind the scenes of being an NBA player.
For example, here is the TikTok that he posted after making the Elite 8 in the NCAA college basketball tournament:
McCain has become so big on TikTok that he has said in interviews that sometimes when fans come up to him it seems like they don't even know that he plays basketball.
Although he does get criticized for posting TikToks, he has explained that each one takes like 20 seconds and he is still training just as much as any other player.
It is also hard to criticize him for this when he is currently one of the best players on his team.
Injury
Well then...
I wrote most of this post before it was just announced that Jared McCain is out indefinitely with a torn meniscus and will need to get surgery.
This is very unfortunate as he was almost definitely going to win Rookie of the Year, and won't be able to anymore because you need to play at least 65 games to be eligible.
It's also very unfortunate, because of how great he has been playing for the 76ers, as I explained in the rest of the post.
bye for now :)
