Derrick Rose has Retired.

Writer: Ethan MelwaniEthan Melwani

After a crazy 16-year-long career Derrick Rose has officially announced his retirement from the NBA.

The Memphis Grizzlies just announced a few days ago that they were waiving him, so I guess he thought this was as good a time as any to retire.

Early Career

Derrick Rose attended college in Memphis, where he led his team to the NCAA Final Four as a freshman. After just 1 year in college, he decided to enter the NBA draft. He ended up being drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft and he was immediately a great player-winning rookie of the year.

In 2009 he improved even more and was named an all-star for the first time.

MVP

Then in 2010, he improved even more and made history by becoming the youngest MVP ever at just 22 years old.

In this season he averaged 25 Points, 7.7 Assists, and 4 rebounds while leading the Chicago Bulls to the best record in the NBA.

Achievements:

In his career, Derrick Rose was a:

NBA Most Valuable Player

3x NBA All-Star

All-NBA Player

All-Rookie Team

2x NBA Player of the Month

5x NBA Player of the Week

3x NBA Rookie of the Month

1x NBA Rookie of the Year

Injury

Derrick Rose's career is considered by basketball fans to be one of the biggest "what ifs" in NBA history. As I explained above Derrick Rose was an amazing player winning awards since the beginning of his career. He was likely on track to continue his amazing career and also had huge potential to keep getting better. However, In the 2011 Playoffs, Derrick Rose suffered a devastating ACL tear, which ended up changing his career forever, as he was never quite the same player since.

After this, he was still a good player who made solid contributions to his teams, but he played way fewer games each season and never got back to being this version of himself.

Hall of Fame?

Every NBA player that has ever won an MVP award is in the Hall of Fame. Considering that Rose was an MVP while also considering the rest of his career, it may become an interesting debate as to whether he should make it.

It's unfortunate that he never won a championship, and that he wasn't able to finish off his career in a less sad way, but he is definitely not a player that people are going to forget anytime soon.

Everybody loves Derrick Rose. Just watch this awesome video of him returning to play in Chicago in a season where he didn't get a chance to play many games:
